Alaska’s Czech community welcomed Ambassador Petr Kolar (right) to a Czech gala event in Anchorage last week, where Alaskan Frank Nosek (left) was promoted to Honorary Consul General of the Czech Republic. Governor Sarah Palin and Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan joined the ambassador in thanking Mr. Nosek for his almost ten years of service as Honorary Consul. Nosek later accompanied Ambassador Kolar at an Alaska World Affairs Council luncheon where the ambassador spoke on “Europe and The United States: Why We Need Each Other.” In his talk, the Czech Republic’s Ambassador to the United Sates speaks about transatlantic relations, Czech-U.S. relations, Iranian protests, missile defense and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dr. Martin has conducted field-based research on refugee issues in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central America in addition to her work on U.S. and European immigration and refugee policy. This week on AWAC Presents, four Alaska servicemen who served in Afghanistan share their experiences and insights on their overseas duty. Colonel Edward Daly, who recently returned from his second tour of Afghanistan, provides an overview of Operation Enduring Freedom with slide show of photos (above) he took. In the second half of the program, Sergeant Major Patrick Meegan, Master Sergeant Scott Anderson and Second Lieutenant John Romspert join Colonel Daly in responding to a wide array of questions from the audience ranging from combating Taliban influence, poppy growth and cultivation, and predictions for the future, as more Americans troops are sent to Afghanistan.

Nick Lawson began working for Doctors Without Borders (Medecins San Frontieres, MSF)  in Southern Sudan during Second Sudanese Civil War in 1997.  Since then he has circled the globe providing aid to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. Today he leads the New York based human resources team that recuits and places Americans in Doctors Without Borders projects around the world. Recorded March 13th in Anchorage, Lawson speaks on Managing and Emergency, Behind the Scence at Doctors Without Borders.
